DC Metro preparing SmarTrip cards for Obama or Romney's inauguration

By Keith Laing - 10/15/12 03:34 PM ET

Like everyone else in the capital city, Washington, D.C.'s Metrorail subway system is waiting to know the winner of the race between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

The organization that runs subway trains in the capital, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), is preparing commemorative SmarTrip fare cards for passengers to see the next president take his oath of office outside the Capitol building.

The authority confirmed to The Hill that it's preparing mock-up cards for both Obama and Romney, with the winner's likeness scheduled to be mass produced after the results are final.

Both Obama and Romney's SmarTrip cards say "Inauguration Day January 21, 2013." Obama's card includes the line "America Makes History Again," while Romney's says "A New Future For America."

Obama's inauguration in 2009 provided Metro with its highest number of passengers in a single day in its 36-year history, when more than one million people rode trains to watch the 44th president take the oath of office.
