$2 billion in Hurricane Sandy aid released, but sequester takes a bite

The Transportation Department on Thursday released $2 billion in aid for Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts, four months after the storm ravaged transit systems along the Atlantic Coast.

At the same time, the agency is moving to cement new regulations governing how it would implement relief efforts in the aftermath of future disasters.

Transit union to administration: Address bus driver fatigue

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is calling for the Obama administration to address long-distance bus driver fatigue.

The Washington, D.C.-based union said the administration has done a good job cracking down on unsafe bus companies, but has done little to address scheduling rules for drivers.

"The [Department of Transportation] crackdown will take more unsafe bus companies off road, but this loophole in federal law continues to allow unscrupulous operators to get away with paying criminally low wages, forcing drivers to work as much as 100 hours a week to support their families,” ATU President Larry Hanley said in a statement Wednesday. “That is the real reason behind driver fatigue, which is the number one cause of fatal bus accidents on our highways.”

Transit group: Ridership topped 10 billion in 2012

More than 10 billion Americans trips on public transportation in 2012, the group that advocates for more mass transit funding said on Monday.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) said there were 10.5 billion public transit system riders last year, which the group said marked the second highest yearly total since 1957.

The Washington, D.C.-based APTA said the ridership totals marked the seventh consecutive year transit system passenger traffic was above 10 billion.

News bites: 'Good pick'

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairwoman Deborah Hersman has been called a “good pick” for Transportation Secretary by a Washington, D.C., newspaper.

Japan’s All Nippon Airways has said that the grounding of Boeing’s 787 “Dreamliner” airplane has affected 100,000 passengers.

The proposed merger between American and U.S. Airlines is said to once again be close to being announced.

New York City is planning three new underground rail projects
