Transportation groups to hold congressional briefing about high-speed rail

By Keith Laing - 07/09/12 04:13 PM ET

A coalition of transportation groups will hold a briefing about high-speed rail during a "Washington Day" at the Capitol on Tuesday.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American High Speed Rail Alliance (AHSRA) and Association of American Railroads (AAR) will host  a hill briefing with executives from high-speed railways within the the International Union of Railways (UIC), the groups said Monday.

Speakers at the briefing will include APTA Presient Michael Melaniphy, President, UIC Director Jean Pierre Loubinoux, East Japan Railways Chairman Satoshi Seino, French Railways CEO Guillaume Pepy, Italian Railways CEO Mauro Moretti, and Russian Railways President Vladimir Yakunin. The speakers will be welcomed to Washington, D.C. at Union Station by Federal Railroad Administration chief Joseph Szabo.

The event comes on the heels of a vote in California to move forward with a controversial high-speed railway that will be one of the largest in the country.

It is intended to preview the UIC's 8th annual World Congress on High Speed Rail that will begin in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will join a panel at the rail congress on Wednesday afternoon.
