GOP Rep. Mica: Post office becoming 'extinct'
House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) said this week that the U.S. Postal Service needed to become more efficient because it was not getting anymore money from Congress.
“The post office is becoming a dinosaur and will soon be extinct if it doesn't adapt," Mica said in an email to supporters. "The money tree in the backyard died, and we have to find a better way to deal with a $6 billion operational deficit because there is no more money coming from here.”
Mica was at a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing this week where members looked for cuts to the post office's workforce. Republicans want the service to seek larger concession from the unions for its workers, the American Postal Workers Union.
"I didn't send an mail to my daughters today," Mica said in the meeting as he held up his smart phone. "I sent them an email.
"You can order your medicines over that, but you cannot get them delivered to your home," countered American Postal Workers Union President Cliff Guffey.
The American Postal Workers Unions and the post office agreed to a deal that both sides say would save about $3.8 billion over the next four years.
