A bipartisan group of members from Pennsylvania and New York have proposed legislation that would require all airlines to install a secondary cockpit, which would help prevent hijackings like those seen in the 9/11 attacks.
Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) said the reinforced doors now used on planes help deter hijackings, but said even these must be opened during flights.

President Obama said Tuesday that the recently approved bill to end air traffic controller furloughs will not eliminate the problems the sequester will cause for airline passengers.
Obama is expected to sign on Tuesday the measure that was hurriedly approved by lawmakers last week to put an end to flight delays across the country, but he said the bill is a temporary fix that will make other problems to the aviation system worse.
"Congress responded to the short-term problem of flight delays by giving us the option of shifting money that's designed to repair and improve airports over the long term to fix the short-term problem," he said. "Well that's not a solution. Essentially what we've done is, we've said, in order to avoid delays this summer, we're going to ensure delays for the next two or three decades."

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is notifying some airline passengers of their eligibility for its ‘Pre-Check’ known traveler program on their board passes.
The TSA said it has approved icons for its Pre-Check program being placed on boarding passes for passengers on Delta, U.S. Airways and United Airlines. The agency said the notifications will help streamline the airport security process because previously cleared passengers will go to correct lines.
The Pre-Check program allows passengers who to volunteer information about themselves in exchange for the possibility of reduced screening at airports. TSA currently offers the program at 40 U.S. airports.

President Obama on Tuesday is expected to sign the bill passed by Congress last week to end furloughs for air traffic controllers that were blamed for flight delays across the country.
Obama has reportedly been held up from signing the bill, which was quickly passed by Congress last week, because of a typo in the legislation.
The measure to end the air traffic controller furloughs — and the flight delays they caused — was passed so quickly that parts of the bill were said to be handwritten.

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairwoman Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) is praising President Obama’s choice of Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx (D) to be the next U.S. Transportation Secretary.
Fudge had criticized Obama for lacking diversity in his early Cabinet choices, but she said Foxx, who is African-American, would make a good DOT Secretary.
“Through his work as mayor and as a city councilman in Charlotte, Anthony addressed the needs of an area that experienced tremendous growth within the past decade,” Fudge said in a statement released by the CBC. “Anthony will surely be an asset to the president’s cabinet and to this nation and I look forward to working with him to ensure the needs of our country’s transportation system are adequately met.”

President Obama called outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood "maybe the best secretary of transportation" in U.S. history on Monday.
Obama was speaking at his announcement of Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to replace LaHood atop the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Before he formally introduced Foxx, Obama heaped praise on LaHood.
"Ray LaHood has said that being the secretary of transportation is the best job he ever had in public service," Obama said at the opening of his remarks on Monday. "And that’s fitting because Ray may be the best secretary of transportation that the nation’s ever had."
