Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown defends high-speed rail from GOP criticism

By Keith Laing

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) offered a lengthy defense of a controversial high-speed railway Wednesday during his state during his State of the State address.

Brown, who is in his second tour of being governor of California, said in his remarks to state lawmakers that critics of the proposal, who are mostly Republicans, were people "who believe that California is in decline.

"This is not a new idea," Brown said according to prepared remarks. "As governor the last time, I signed legislation to study the concept. Now thirty years later, we are within weeks of a revised business plan that will enable us to begin initial construction before the year is out.

"President Obama strongly supports the project and has provided the majority of funds for this first phase," he continued. "It is now your decision to evaluate the plan and decide what action to take. Without any hesitation, I urge your approval."

GOP looks to limit CFPB, NLRB powers in reaction to ‘recess’ appointments

By Pete Kasperowicz

Rep. Jeff Landry (La.) and 20 other House Republicans introduced legislation this week that would limit the authority of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to operate as long as they are headed by appointees who were recess-appointed while the Senate was not in recess.

The bill is a reaction to President Obama’s Jan. 4 appointment of Richard Cordray to head the CFPB, and three other appointees to the NLRB. Republicans in both the House and Senate said these appointments were an illegal power grab, as the Senate was not in recess, and instead was holding pro forma sessions every few days.

Union targets vulnerable GOP freshmen on FAA bill

By Kevin Bogardus

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) union is taking aim at a pair of vulnerable House Republicans for backing a controversial provision in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill.

The CWA radio ads slam freshmen Reps. Chip Craavack (R-Minn.) and Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) for putting "special interest politics over the needs of the American people."

"Enough! Quit playing games with our jobs, our infrastructure, and our future," the ads say.

Cravaack and Duffy are among the House Republicans most at risk of losing their seats in the 2012 election, according to The Cook Political Report’s race ratings.

A CWA spokesman said the radio ads would run until the end of the week in Cravaack and Duffy's congressional districts. The spokesman said it is the union's policy not to disclose the total cost of the ad buy.
