A two-year-old effort to require the Transportation Security Administration to donate change left by passengers at airport security to veterans organizations has revived as a group of newspapers is rallying to the cause. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) filed a bill that would require TSA to transfer money that is not claimed by passengers when they leave airport security checkpoints to United Service Organizations (USO) in April of 2009. But as 2011 became 2012, the Los Angeles Times and the New Orleans Times-Picayune have written about the measure, with the latter arguing in an editorial Tuesday that the bill "makes a lot more sense than allowing TSA to keep the money." "Airline passengers going through security checkpoints sometimes leave things behind — including loose coins that totaled $376,480.39 in fiscal 2010," the Times-Picayune wrote.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) did not need a bat signal to catch a passenger it said was carrying a punching blade. The agency said Friday that a passenger at San Antonio International Airport was caught with a blade that was shaped like Batman's famous "bat signal." The agency said the blade was one of more than two dozen weapons discovered this week at airports as holiday travel picked up. Among the other discoveries, the agency said Friday, was a flare gun with seven flares at Norfolk International Airport in Virginia.

Eager to show airline passengers it "cares" about them, the Transportation Security Administration said this week it had launched a hotline for travels with disabilities and special medical needs.
The hotline, TSA Cares, will be toll-free and provide passengers with answers to questions about the security process, the agency said.
TSA Administrator John Pistole said the hotline would reduce the number of incidents at airport security checkpoints.
“TSA Cares provides passengers with disabilities and medical needs another resource to use before they fly, so they know what to expect when going through the screening process,” Pistole said in a statement.
