Amtrak train collides with truck in Maine

By Keith Laing

An Amtrak train hit a dump truck Monday in Maine, killing the driver, the agency confirmed.

The train, number 681 on Amtrak's Downeaster service, hit the truck just after 11 a.m. The driver was reportedly trying to beat the train to a railroad crossing.

Amtrak said none of the 109 passengers on the train was injured, though service on the Downeaster route, which runs from Boston to Portland, Maine, was disrupted.

The accident was the second crash involving an Amtrak train and a truck in recent weeks. A tractor-trailer hit a train in Nevada in June, leading to six deaths.

The accidents have come amid debates in Washington about privatizing Amtrak service in the Northeast. Republican critics of the agency have argued that private companies could operate the service more efficiently than the national passenger rail service.

Ford supports Rep. McCarthy bill to ban hand-held cell phone use while driving nationwide

By Keith Laing

Detroit-based Ford Motor Co. endorsed a measure Monday introduced by New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D) to ban texting while driving nationwide.

More than 30 states have some form of limit on cellphone use in automobiles, and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has been encouraging other states to follow suit. But McCarthy introduced a bill last month to ban the use of hand-held phones behind the wheel at the federal level, which Ford Vice President of Government Affairs Pete Lawson said Monday was a good idea.

“Ford endorses Rep. McCarthy's legislation because it represents a practical, commonsense approach to a national problem," Lawson said in a statement. "Distracted driving is an important issue, and that's why Ford became the first automaker to support proposed legislation banning hand-held texting while driving in 2009 and why we are proud to support Rep. McCarthy's legislation that will ban using hand-held devices while driving.

Obama pushes for infrastructure bank proposal after debt deal

By Keith Laing

Making the case that it was important for Congress to agree on a deal to raise the federal debt ceiling, President Obama said Monday that doing so could free lawmakers to consider other job creation ideas, such as the infrastructure bank proposed by Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas).

Speaking at the end of a roughly 40-minute news conference Friday against a backdrop of last week's smaller-than-expected job growth report, Obama again made the case for the infrastructure bank.

"The infrastructure bank that we've proposed is relatively small," he said. "But could we imagine a project where we're rebuilding roads, bridges and ports and schools and broadband lines and smart-grids and taking all those construction workers and putting them back to work right now?

Center for American Progress: Jobs report calls for bigger transportation bill

By Keith Laing

The smaller than expected job growth numbers released Friday show the need for a larger federal surface transportation bill, the left-leaning Center for American Progress said Friday.

In an op-ed, CAP Senior Fellow Donna Cooper said that Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) proposed $230 billion bill would not do enough to stimulate the stagnant U.S. economy.

"In 2009, when Mica’s party was in the minority, he didn’t think we were spending enough on transportation," Cooper wrote. "He chided President Obama for an 'almost miniscule' investment in infrastructure in the Recovery Act stimulus. And the lawmaker said we were insufficiently ambitious about building high-speed rail lines.

"Today, he and his leadership stand behind a bill that actually reduces the level of federal investment in infrastructure," she continued. "The result will be a reduction of at least 100,000 private-sector jobs annually, small-business closures, and increased likelihood of tragic road and bridge failures."
