Nuclear watchdog seeks to change rules on transporting radioactive material

By Julian Hattem

The nation's nuclear watchdog wants to issue new rules on transporting radioactive material to bring the United States in line with international standards.

The changes to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) rules would meet 2009 revisions to regulations from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the global nuclear energy organization, as well as 2011 regulations from the Department of Transportation.

Boeing resumes delivery of 'Dreamliner' planes to airlines

By Keith Laing

Boeing has resumed deliveries of its 787 "Dreamliner" to airlines, the company said on Tuesday.

Boeing said it delivered a new version of the plane, which was grounded for months by Obama administration transportation officials, to the Japanese airline ANA.

ANA was flying one of the initial 787s that developed battery problems that prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other international aviation agencies to order airlines to stop flying the airplane model worldwide.

Boeing said on Tuesday that it had made its first delivery of a 787 since the FAA and other agencies began approving its redesign of the plane's lithium batteries.

Transit union pushes for passage of internet sales tax bill

By Keith Laing

The union for public transportation workers is pushing Congress to pass a bill to allow state and local governments to collect sales taxes.

More tax dollars for municipal governments means more possible money for them to dedicate to public transportation systems, the Washington, D.C.-based Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) said on Tuesday.

ATU President Larry Hanley said in a statement the Internet sales tax bill would provide "much needed funding to meet … rising demand" for public transportation.

"Many local transit agencies rely on sales taxes so a larger sales tax base would provide more funding for public transportation," the ATU said in a press release announcing its support for the Internet sales.

Bill calls for increased US oil production to displace Iranian oil

By Zack Colman

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) will introduce legislation Wednesday calling for increased drilling on U.S. federal lands to displace Iranian oil on the world market, according to a copy of the bill obtained by The Hill.

The bill requires the president to establish enough “Iranian Oil Replacement Zones” on federal lands to produce 1.25 million barrels of oil per day — approximately the amount Iran exports every day.

An Inhofe aide told The Hill that would divert oil the U.S. imports from Saudi Arabia and elsewhere to nations that still buy Iranian crude, such as China, India and Japan. The goal is to give President Obama wiggle room to enforce full sanctions on Iranian oil by ending waivers awarded to some nations.
