The office, part of the Department of Education, tweeted out a picture of actress Kristen Wiig from the film "Bridesmaids" above a caption that read "Help me. I'm poor."

"If this is you," the tweet continued, "Then you better fill out your FAFSA," referring to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The tweet was quickly deleted after receiving blowback from some on Twitter and an apology was issued.

Federal Student Aid gives out $150 billion in grants, loans and work-study for college students every year, making it the largest U.S. provider of financial aid. The application deadline for the 2013-2014 academic year is next Monday.

Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.) scolded the Department of Education in a tweet Wednesday morning.
