Congresswoman announces pregnancy on Twitter

The highest-ranking Republican woman in the House announced via Twitter Monday night that she is expecting her second child.

At around 10 p.m., Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) tweeted:

Brian and I are excited to announce we're expecting; Cole will have a baby sister for Christmas.

In April 2007, her first son became the first child in decades to be born to a sitting member of Congress.

McMorris Rodgers, who is also vice chairwoman of the House GOP conference, posted a longer statement on her Facebook page.

"There are no words to describe how excited we are that our family continues to grow ... Please know, of course, that I take my duties as your Representative very seriously, and I will continue to work my heart out on behalf of Eastern Washington," it read.

House GOP Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) noted the news a few hours later:

Congratulations to Brian and @CathyMcMorris on their announcement! http://twitter.com/cathymcmorris/status/20186587903
