McCain, Snooki resume tweeting over birthday

The Twitterverse is still connecting Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and an unlikely fan — pop culture icon Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.

Polizzi celebrated her 23rd birthday on Monday, prompting a "Happy birthday @Sn00ki" message from McCain, who first started tweeting with the "Jersey Shore" star about a tax on tanning salons included in March's healthcare overhaul.

"Thabk you Johnny ! :) xox," Polizzi wrote back.

She continued later with a response to the "fricken weirdos" who criticized McCain for tweeting with her.

"Everyone get real with given @SenJohnMcCain bs for wishing me happy bday ... #teammccain :) thanks."

Snooki, who voted for McCain for president in 2008, explained her view of politics during an interview with Meghan McCain in July.

"To be honest with you, I’m not really a Republican or a Democrat," Snooki said in an interview. "I actually signed up as an independent, just because I don’t want to pick any side and also I don’t really know a lot about politics. I only know politics about, like, you know, tanning and being a Guidette. So when I saw it was Obama and McCain, to be honest with you, the only reason why I voted for your father was because he was really cute and I liked when he did his speeches."

Sen. McCain has called tweeting with Snooki an "American phenomenon."

After he expressed concern about her August 2010 arrest, she tweeted: "#SenJohnMcCain  thanks for having my back! I'm going to make you part of my family. Grandpa Snooki for President!"

Season 3 of "Jersey Shore" premieres Jan. 6, 2011, on MTV.
