U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice tweeted in support of American diplomats on Monday following the release of thousands of sensitive cables revealing their raw and often unflattering views of foreign leaders.

"Our diplomats are just that, diplomats," she said. "I applaud their great skill and integrity."

Rice attached the hashtag "#cablegate," which links to a network-wide conversation on the scandal.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, among other officials, spent Monday playing damage control.

"American diplomats are doing the work we expect them to do," she said during one press conference.

She also repeated the comments of a foreign leader who played down the significance of the leak.

"Don't worry about it," she reported the official as saying. "You should see what we say about you."
