White House press secretary Robert Gibbs communicated with followers on Twitter Friday while accompanying President Obama on a surprise visit to Afghanistan.

"Good morning...President just landed at Bagram [Air Force Base] in Afghanistan..windy and cold here and about 9 pm here," he said.

"President at Bagram and on phone with President Karzai - our planned helicopter ride has been scrubbed - high winds and low clouds," he added later.

Obama will spend the duration of the trip at the base because of bad weather. He will speak with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on the phone in lieu of an in-person meeting in Kabul.

The president will also meet with wounded soldiers and civilian contractors, award four Purple Heart medals and give a speech, according to pool reports.
