Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) responded to Friday's job report with a call for a public jobs bill similar to the Works Progress Administration.
"Unemployment rate is sneaking up again, time for a public jobs bill. WPA style," Ellison tweeted.
Ellison's tweet was in reference to the Works Projects Administration (WPA), a relief program from Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal that employed workers for building public works projects.
His tweet comes the same day that a dismal jobs report for May was released. The economy added only 54,000 jobs that month and the unemployment rate increased to 9.1 percent from 9.0.
White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Austan Goolsbee described the report as a "bump in the road."
