GOP freshman challenges social media champion

A GOP freshman takes on last year's winner starting Monday in the final round of the GOP 2011 New Media Challenge.

Freshman Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) faces off in direct competition against last year's challenge winner Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) in the championship round of the competition, which aims to promote social media use amongst Republican members.

Fleming brings his veteran status to the table, but several of his fellow Illinois Republicans are pulling for Walsh. Rep. Don Manzullo tweeted on Monday:

Follow #TeamIL member @RepJoeWalsh and help him win the House New Media Challenge! #GOPNMC

Rep. John Shimkus also tweeted support:

Final round of the #GOPNMC sets @RepJoeWalsh against the defending champ. Follow Joe & help #TeamIL clinch the title.

Fleming has a current total of 3,826 followers on Twitter. Walsh is keeping pace with 2,435 followers. Each round of the competition is noncumulative, so either congressman has a strong chance to win in the final tally, which includes followers, "likes" on Facebook and video views on YouTube) on June 24.

Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), new to Twitter since the beginning of May, will take third place in the competition, which was organized in brackets.
