Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) congratulated Michele Bachmann on her run for the presidency just as the Minnesota congresswoman announced she was dropping out of the presidential race.
"Congrats to @MicheleBachmann for an admirable & honorable campaign. I'm sure she will continue to serve our country well," McCain tweeted on Wednesday.
McCain, who was the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, will reportedly endorse Mitt Romney for president later on Wednesday.
Bachmann dropped out after coming in sixth in Iowa, where she had the best chance of doing well and harnessing enough momentum to win in later-voting states.
Similarly, Jon Huntsman released a statement praising Bachmann's "energetic and passionate voice" in the race.
"I wish Michele and her family nothing but the best, and know she will continue to be a powerful force in the fight to defeat Barack Obama and restore America’s greatness," Huntsman said in the statement.
