Democratic senators wager cheesecake, chowder on Super Bowl
Democratic Sens. John Kerry (Mass.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) will have a little something extra at stake next Sunday when their hometown teams face off in the Super Bowl, after wagering New England clam chowder against New York cheesecake on football's biggest game.
"Done: bet @SenGillibrand chowder against her NY cheesecake, Pats will get revenge on the Giants in SB 46 #winitforMyra," Kerry tweeted Wednesday.
Myra Kraft, the wife of Patriots's owner Bob Kraft, passed away over the summer and was well known in the Boston area for her philanthropic efforts. The Giants bested the then-undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII on a fluky last-minute play in which Giants wide receiver David Tyree caught a pass against the side of his helmet, dashing New England fans' hopes for a perfect season.
The senators didn't reveal whether Kerry would be spotting Gillibrand the three points the Patriots are currently favored by. The game will be played Feb. 5 in Indianapolis.
