Gingrich attacks Romney as 'avid hunter of small varmints'
Newt Gingrich on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on fellow GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney over gun rights.
Gingrich tweeted: "@MittRomney Do you still believe taking away 2nd amendment rights 'helps protect us'? romneyguns.com"
Gingrich's campaign launched a new website, RomneyGuns.com, as a showcase for Gingrich's offensive against Romney's position on the Second Amendment, or the right to bear arms. The website taunts Romney as an "Avid Hunter of 'Small Varmints.' "
During a debate last month, Romney said he had been elk-hunting in Montana since the last election, but acknowledged that "he's not the great hunter that some on the stage are" — a reference to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who was then also a candidate for the GOP nomination.
Gingrich also recently admitted that he has never owned a gun.
Gingrich's new website allows supporters to donate as well as download derisive avatars for Facebook. The avatar images include "Deer for Romney," "Quail for Romney," "PETA for Romney" and "Moderates for Romney."
