New Jersey Dem: 'Never forget' Whitney Houston

A New Jersey Democrat tweeted Monday that his home state will “never forget” iconic singer Whitney Houston, who died over the weekend.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) tweeted: “NewJersey will never forget our very own Whitney Houston whose talent and gifts made an everlasting impact on #Newark, #NJ and the world.”

Houston was born in Newark, N.J. in 1963. Her hometown mourned her on Monday. A church where she sang early in her career, near downtown Newark, attracted mourners such as civil-rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, according to Reuters. And a school named after the singer in East Orange, N.J., also held a tribute to the singer on Monday afternoon, according to the local ABC affiliate.
