Rep. West says GOP planning to respond to #40dollar campaign
Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) on Wednesday said that he and possibly other House Republicans plan to respond to the White House’s campaign to promote the payroll tax cut extension with their own $40 campaign.
“As a matter of fact, we're going to accumulate our own list of the top 10 things that $40 does not get you,” he said on CNN.
The White House successfully used the Twitter hashtag #40dollars to engage voters in their push to pass an extension of the payroll tax cut late last year.
“I can't fill up a tank of gas in my vehicle back home with $40 of gas,” West said, though he did not cite the type of vehicle.
A short-term extension of the payroll tax holiday passed in December expires March 31.
Obama recently thanked supporters for getting involved last year and urged them to take up the hashtag again to urge Congress to act quickly to pass a longer extension this year.
West dismissed the White House’s social media campaign as a “political tool” and not “good policy.”
“You said [it is] a political tool,” West said, responding to CNN morning host Soledad O’Brien. “That means this is not about good policy. That means it's not about the future for this country.”
West said he has not decided whether he will vote for a Republican-proposed plan to extend the holiday.
“I voted yes for this back in December and we had everything paid for,” he said. “[This bill] really does cause me some consternation because one of the things I did not agree on the two-month extension was that we’re going to raise the fees on the loan guarantees for the government sponsored enterprises, Fannie and Freddie. … If we're going to do it on the backs of American homeowners, I won't support that.”
