Trump hits phones to fundraise for Romney
There might be very little similar in the lives of interns on the Mitt Romney campaign and for reality television host Donald Trump, but both hit the phones Wednesday to drum up support for the former Massachusetts governor's campaign.
"Very successful fundraising for @MittRomney yesterday," Trump tweeted Thursday morning.
The real estate mogul's media liaison, Michael Cohen, later confirmed to CNN that Trump had raised "a substantial amount of money for the governor" over an hour of fundraising calls.
Trump endorsed Romney at an event in Las Vegas earlier this month after dizzying speculation that he might either enter the presidential race himself or back one of Romney's opponents. He later said he deserved credit for Romney's convincing win in the Nevada caucuses.
“There was a lot riding on that particular race in Nevada and it was interesting, because the numbers were much, much greater than you thought,” Trump said during an interview on Fox News. “And a lot of people are giving me credit for that. And I will accept that credit.”
Democrats have largely lampooned the endorsement, with the Obama campaign needling Romney about the endorsement over Twitter. Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) called the endorsement "a non-news event" and mocked both for making millions "firing people" during an interview earlier this month.
"It really wouldn't be surprising if Donald Trump supports Mitt Romney, because they both like firing people and they've both made millions doing it," Wasserman Schultz said on MSNBC. "Donald Trump is such a cartoon character, an endorsement no matter who he chooses is like Bugs Bunny making an endorsement."
