Former Vice President Cheney was released from the hospital on Tuesday following a 10-day recovery from a heart transplant on March 24.

His wife Liz tweeted last week that Cheney was "doing great" and thanked well-wishers for cards.

According to an aide, Cheney spent part of last week in a Virginia hospital personally returning calls from strangers who wished him well following his surgery.

Cheney, former President George W. Bush's vice president, had been on the donor wait list since June 2010. He used an electronic pace maker before the surgery and has suffered five heart attacks in the past.

Liz Cheney tweeted a picture of the two on Tuesday captioned simply: "home."
