McCain has been highly critical of Russia’s leadership, due in part to its relationship with Syria, and of Obama’s continued willingness to work with Putin.
McCain has his own Twitter history with Putin.
Last year, McCain suggested in a tweet that Putin would have his own “Arab Spring” rebellion to deal with soon, and Putin, then prime minister, lashed out at the senator in a televised interview, suggesting he had gone “nuts” during his time as a prisoner of war.
McCain also criticized the relationship between Obama and Putin earlier this year when Obama’s private comments to then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev were caught on a live mic. Obama, in the conversation, asked Medvedev to pass on to Putin his comment that “after my election, I [will] have more flexibility.”
