Sierra Club, Erick Erickson agree on New Mexico Senate race

The Sierra Club on Friday suggested Erick Erickson should sign up as a member.

The influential conservative blogger and the environmental lobby seem to be on the same side for once in New Mexico, according to a Twitter exchange between Erickson and Trey Pollard, the group's deputy press secretary.

Rep. Heather Wilson (R) is running for the Senate seat in New Mexico. The Sierra Club is blasting the Albuquerque metro area with what they called a "six-figure, high-saturation ad buy" that charges her with shielding chemical manufacturers and oil companies that allegedly polluted groundwater with the chemical compound MTBE. The ads say her voting record protected Big Oil while she accepted contributions from the companies that benefit.

“When Heather Wilson allowed oil companies to put toxic chemicals into the ground, she was allowing it to go into our kids,” the ad says.

Wilson is considered a moderate Republican in a race that The Hill rates as "leans Democratic." 

Conservative outside spending group American Crossroads is supporting her with positive ads.

But Erickson, an influential conservative blogger, has painted a target on Wilson. He wrote on his blog last year, "The number one goal of conservatives in 2012, other than defeating Barack Obama, has got to be defeating Heather Wilson in New Mexico."

He apparently has not changed his opinion, although Wilson won the Republican primary and will go on to face Democrat Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) in November.
