Boehner, Kerry congratulate first American to win judo gold
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) both took credit for the athlete who won the first gold medal in judo for an American in Olympic history on Thursday.
Kayla Harrison won the half-heavyweight division title in the sport on Thursday morning in London. Boehner and Kerry were both quick to congratulate her and claim her as a native of their state. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) also claimed Harrison for Ohio and Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) for Massachusetts.

Harrison was born and won national titles while living in Middletown, Ohio, but currently lives and trains in Wakefield, Mass., according to her official biography.
Although Twitter has also hosted plenty of complaints about NBC’s tape delay on some of the more highly anticipated events taking place in London — prompting hashtags such as #Olympicsfail, a play on the official #Olympics, and the Twitter feed @NBCDelayed — members of Congress have kept up a steady stream of congratulations for constituents competing in various events.
Despite the complaints online, NBC viewership has been higher than for the last summer Olympics. Boehner’s office tweeted evidence that one enthralled member of the viewing audience is the Speaker of the House.
