NASA's 'Mohawk guy' heard Obama gave him a nickname

The man President Obama dubbed "Mohawk guy" tweeted that he can't believe the president gave him a nickname on Monday.

Obama called to congratulate members of the crew of the NASA Curiosity's Mars rover team earlier in the day. During the call, he asked about Flight Director Bobak Ferdowsi, calling him “Mohawk guy,” the man who became an Internet sensation after NASA live-streamed Curiosity's Martian landing last week.

"And I, in the past, thought about getting a mohawk myself — but my team keeps on discouraging me," Obama said. "And now that he’s received marriage proposals and thousands of new Twitter followers, I think that I’m going to go back to my team and see if it makes sense."

Obama often jokes about his Twitter followers, for instance with actor Aziz Ansari earlier this year.
