Tweets about the 2012 election hit the 20 million mark on Tuesday night, breaking the record for the most-tweeted-about political event in history, Twitter said.
Twitter reported the landmark at about 10 p.m. EST. The record breaks the one set by the first presidential debate last month, which saw about 10 million tweets.
6.4 million tweets had already been sent about Election Day by 2 p.m., and Twitter reported the number was steadily rising each hour. Earlier in the day, Twitter also reported that the phrase “I voted” was being used an average of 3,000 times per minute in tweets.
