The tweet refers to the crash that killed most of the Thundering Herd football team from West Virginia's Marshall University on Nov. 14, 1970. The plane crash, which killed all 75 people on board, left the Marshall community and surrounding area in mourning.

West Virginia's other Sen. Joe Manchin (D) also tweeted about Marshall later in the day.
