Wilson gains thousands of Twitter followers after outburst

By Jordan Fabian - 09/10/09 09:38 AM ET

Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-S.C.) decision to shout "you lie!" at President Obama during his speech Wednesday night may not have been the most politically expedient move, but it did wonders for his Twitter follower count.

Before his speech, Wilson had just over 2,300 Twitter followers before the address. Now he has more than 6,900 people tracking him, just about tripling his follower base.

The fifth-term Republican has not tweeted since Monday.

Usually, users gain followers by tweeting often and by other high-follower users re-tweeting their messages. Wilson's retort proved to be an exception to these trends.

Wilson's last tweet came at a Labor Day rally in Chapin, S.C.:

Happy Labor Day! Wonderful parade at Chapin, many people called out to oppose Obamacare which I assured them would be relayed tomorrow to DC

The South Carolinian's website has also seen exceptionally high traffic since his outburst, causing the site to crash, reports The Hill's Eric Zimmermann.

THE ONLY BRAVE COURAGEOUS SOUL IN THE U.S.GOVERNMENT!!!DO NOT APOLOGIZE PLEASE!REP. JOE WILSON FOR PRESIDENT!!!KEE P UP THE GOOD WORK!BY TC on 09/10/2009 at 13:11
To KAYE B. It is most certainly NOT called freedom of "speach", you idiot. It's called freedom of speech. And I seriously doubt that freedom of speech includes the right to defame others by saying things that aren't true. In fact, there's a name for that. One is libel, the other slander. Take your pick. Try it yourself by lying about others and see what kind of lawsuit you end up in. But first, learn how to spell.BY Lucy on 09/10/2009 at 13:11
it's time that rep. wilson and all the other republicans stop listening to talk radio and fox news. people like kaye are the ultimate pawns in this media circus. Talk radio has dumbed down a great percentage of the population, but, they were dumb enough already!!! These are the guys who defended $4.00 a gallon gasoline, deregulated wall street, deregula ted the fda, and are now protecting the livelyhood of these poor insurance agency's who rape and pillage us by hte hour…way to go joe wilson, and you too kaye… think before you speak. FREEDOM OF SPEECH, SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE not a middle school type rumor mill.Where's a death panel when we need one???????BY daniel on 09/10/2009 at 13:19
Joe Wilson should be given an award for calling a lie a lie. Those of us at home were thinking the same thing and only one in congress had the nerve to name what was going on. How can the same group that booed Bush during the 2005 State of the Union address find this not to fit established decorum.BY Thomas Quinn on 09/10/2009 at 13:45
I HAVE TRIED TO GET TO THE CONGRESSMAN ALL DAY SINCE 9AM. I WANT TO COMPLIMENT HIM FOR SPEAKING OUT ON THE PRESIDENT'S LIES. I WAS SHOUTING THE SAME THING TO MYSELF AS I WATCHED THE DISGRACEFUL LECTURE LAST NIGHT. I HOPE I CAN GET TO HIS WEB PAGE SOON. I WANT TO MAKE A DONATION TO HIM.JOE MCINTYRENAPLES, FLBY JOSEPH MCINTYRE on 09/10/2009 at 13:56
Rep. Joe Wilson ought to apologize to the Congress as well. This was not the halls of the U.S. Senate in 1856, nor a raucous and stacked town hall meeting; not even a House debate. This was an address by the President to a joint meeting of our Congress and his total lack of respect for the President, his colleagues and the millions of Americans who choose to listen, consider and discuss the issue was appalling. He got his 15 minutes of fame worldwide, but I was embarassed as an American.BY Janet on 09/10/2009 at 16:30
