Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Wednesday reiterated his opposition to inclusion of a hate crimes amendment to a defense authorization bill after conferees decided to include it in their report today.

McCain, who is ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has claimed that the measure is inappropriate to include in the defense bill and that Congress should consider it as separate legislation.

The senator tweeted today:

Just completed DoD Auth conference report - strongly oppose the hate crime legislation that was added, but we must support our troops!

Most Republicans oppose the amendment while most Democrats support it.
