Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) floated an idea on Twitter this afternoon: should she become the first person to tweet from a state dinner?
Trying to figure out if it's tacky to tweet from State dinner? What do you think? I think Mom would say yes,it's definitely tacky.
Two journalists replied suggested that doing so would not be tacky. Slate's John Dickerson responded on Twitter that it would be rude to tweet during dinner convsersation but enlightening otherwise:
@clairecmc Tacky to Tweet during diner conversation but some insight/observation that offers a window into the event would be lovely.
ABC News Senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper said on Twitter her tweets could be "ground-breaking:"
@clairecmc i disagree. i think a State Dinner tweet would be ground-breaking and a quite polite shout-out to the twitterverse
McCaskill, however, did not heed the advice of the two reporters, concluding it would be "tacky" to tweet from the White House dinner. Instead she agreed with what she thinks her mother would say:
ok ok...definitely tacky. But I will report in after dinner. love you Mom.
