Snowstorm strands senators on Capitol Hill
The beginnings of a potential blizzard is keeping senators stowed away on Capitol Hill on Friday night.
Sen.
Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said he spent the night in his Capitol Hill
office, likely out of fear of Saturday's treacherous commute for
lawmaker.
Grassley tweeted on Friday evening:
Bc of potential blizzard I've come to office to sleep. Vote at 720am vote Sat. Hv not missed vote 7/93. 5700 votes consecutive
722am Sat Voting on Defense APPropriations. Considering blizzard Lots of colleagues here on time. Ovrnite in office so I cld b here
Grassley
won't just be looking to keep alive a Cal Ripken-like streak; senators
will vote on final passage on the defense authorization early Saturday
morning. The Senate invoked cloture on that bill early Friday morning
after most Republicans had voted against ending debate in a bid to
stall the health debate.
After moving on the defense bill, the
Senate will resume its debate of its healthcare reform bill. Democratic
leaders need to move on that bill in order to meet a tight debate
deadline that would have senators voting on final passage for the bill
on Christmas Eve.
