Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) on Monday said she was "glad" that former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire has "finally cleared the air" about his steroid use.

The former first baseman admitted earlier Monday that he used steroids during the 1998 season during which he broke Roger Maris' single-season home run record.

McCaskill -- a Missouri native who calls St. Louis home -- tweeted:

Mark McGuire [sic] admits steroid use and apologizes. Glad he has finally cleared the air.

Many fans and baseball observers suspected McGwire of using steroids. Suspicions only rose after he flatly denied using the illegal substances before a congressional hearing in 2005.

"I'm not here to talk about the past," he said at the time.>
