One of Congress' biggest cycling fanatics said Wednesday that he won't be taking his bike out in today's snowstorm in D.C.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) who heads the Congressional Bike Caucus, said on Twitter he won't trek out in the near-zero visibility conditions in the nation's capital:
The snow wins…no bike today. Ice has stopped me before, but not snow in DC
The Washington area received up to 10 inches of snow between Tuesday and Wednesday after a storm dumped about two feet of snow on the region this weekend.
More context:
Blumenhauer is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bike Caucus, a 182-member, bipartisan coalition of House members committed to "complementing the efforts of the millions of cyclists actively working for safer roads, more bikeways, convenient bike parking and increased recognition of the importance of cycling for transportation and recreation," according to their Web site.
Blumenhauer founded the caucus in the 1990s as "an informal, bipartisan group whose primary goal would be to provide a place for cycling Members of Congress and their staffs to have fun," according to their history. But the group has since evolved into a sizable policy-centric caucus with members representing more than 40 states and the District of Columbia.
But the Oregon congressman said he would not let the snow completely defeat him.
He tweeted just after his first message:
One upside of the storm…finally being able to use extra pair of X-country skis stored in office since first elected. Hooray!
First be a good neighbor and shovel snow off my sidewalk.
