House Dem reveals the 'universal food of meetings'

Aynone who has been in a business meeting knows what Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) was talking about in her latest tweet.

Upon returning to Washington from recess, the freshman Democrat commented on the ubiquitous doughnut platters that sit in conference rooms in Congress and around the country. Pingree noted the spreads were something to which any American could relate, calling them the "universal food of meetings."

She tweeted Wednesday:

Back to work in Washington, endless meetings & starting the day with the universal food of meetings (and bad coffee) http://yfrog.com/0ye7oj

You would think members of Congress could get better coffee than what she described.

Here are those treats that Homer Simpson loves so much:

Reid tweet: 'We're re-energized' to pass health bill

After an Oval Office meeting Tuesday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) took to Twitter in order to set the stage for the president's address to a joint session of Congress tomorrow night.

Reid, who met with President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), said the Democratic leaders were "re-energized" to pass healthcare reform, echoing comments he made at a brief press conference after the meeting.

Though both leaders expressed confidence that Congress would pass health reform, Reid and Pelosi did not offer concrete statments on whether they endorsed specifics, such as the public option.

Reid tweeted:

Returned from mtg w/ the Pres. We're re-energized and ready to pass health care reform. Pls watch Obama's speech tomorrow at 5pm PT.

In his address, Obama "will answer many of the big questions about how we move forward on healthcare reform," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs at his Daily Press Briefing this afternoon.

'One of these days'

"One of these days" Creigh Deeds (D-Va.) thinks he'll be Virginia's governor.

The state Senator from Bath County might just be singing a song of the same name by Drive-By Truckers, an alternative country band. Deeds tweeted what he's listening to at the moment, something he often does for his Twitter followers.

Today's choice happens to be the Georgia-based rockers:

A Driveby Truckers afternoon

Pa. House candidate enters the fray on Twitter

A former health policy adivser to President Barack Obama's campaign officially announced his House candidacy on Twitter Tuesday morning. Manan Trivedi is running for a suburban Philadelphia open seat in 2010 that Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.) now holds.

Gerlach is running for governor next year.

Trivedi, who served as a military doctor in Iraq, tweeted:

My first tweet and it's official. I am running for Congress in the PA-06: http://trivediforcongress.com/

The native Pennsylvanian is considered somewhat of an insurgent candidate on the Democratic side, taking on former Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board member Doug Pike (D-Pa.)

Pike, who announced in April, has received endorsements from party leaders and has largely self-funded his campaign.

Cook Political Report rates the race as a toss-up, but rates the sixth district as leaning Democratic overall.

Republicans that have already entered the race are Chester County Recorder Ryan Costello and state Rep. Curt Schroder.

Burgess: Obama should turn to the 'kids table' for healthcare ideas

A leading Republican lawmaker on healthcare reform on Tuesday said President Barack Obama should look to the "kids table" for fresh ideas on the hot-button issue.

Burgess, who coyly referred to the Republican minority, doesn't believe the president will actually scrap current proposals as some Republicans have suggested he do. But he said that Obama ought to hear out his GOP counterparts.

Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Tex.), a top health negotiator on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also called the president's address to a joint session of Congress tomorrow night a "high-risk" strategy to boost healthcare reform.

The physician-turned-congressman tweeted on Tuesday morning:

All eyes will be on the House tomorrow night. In what I believe to be a high-risk strategy, the president may finally spell out HIS vision.

He certainly cannot simply re-state what has been said before. This has to be what he sees as the concrete path to reform.

My preference would be to hit the reset, or at least the pause, button. It would be great to actually engage the minority and rank and file.

Those of us at the kids table have good ideas as well.

Burgess, who has frequently criticized Democratic health reform plans, first called the president's speech "high-risk" during an interview last week.
