Democrats in Congress were quick on Friday to condemn the National Rifle Association (NRA) for proposing armed guards in every school. On Twitter, Democrats were "shocked" and "outraged" by the "farce" and "disgrace" of the NRA's press conference on Friday, the pro-gun organization's first detailed response to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., one week ago. Several Democrats, including Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), said that asking the federal government to mandate a program that puts armed guards in schools should not earn support from limited-government conservatives in the other party. Republicans did not rush to Twitter with thoughts on the NRA's proposal.

President Obama observed a moment of silence Friday morning at the White House in honor of the victims of the Newton, Conn., elementary school massacre.
The president observed the moment of silence in private; no press was allowed. But Obama posted a personal tweet shortly before the moment of silence recognizing the victims. White House press secretary Jay Carney also urged followers to join the president in observing the moment of silence.
