UPDATED DNC asks 'WHAT UP' with Michael Steele's blog

By Jordan Fabian

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) today scoffed at the quick name change of Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Michael Steele new blog.

On Tuesday, the GOP rolled out its new website featuring a blog written by Steele entitled" What Up." After facing a Internet mockery, the committee has apparently re-named the blog to "Changing the Game."

The DNC decided to take a lick at the name change on Twitter:

WHAT UP with the changed blog name, @Michael_Steele?! http://bit.ly/2P7YHi

The DNC, however, did make a slight gaffe, tweeting at Steele's inactive Twitter feed from his days as chairman of the Republican organization GOPAC. Steele has an RNC Twitter account but has not used it.

UPDATED 2:03 P.M.

In a Twitter direct message, the DNC defended their use of the @Michael_Steele account, saying "we'd have tweeted @MichaelSteele if he ever used it."

Rep. Fallin's Twitter account attacked by phishing scam

By Jordan Fabian

Rep. Mary Fallin's (R-Okla.) Twitter account has been attacked by a phishing scam in which an outside user hacks into an online account using fraudulent means.

The attack on Fallin is one of the only lawmakers to fall victim to a phishing scam. She just sent out this tweet:

if you just received a DM from my account, pls do not open it. It is a phishing link. Apologies and have a great day!

Phishing scams are typical initiated when a user clicks on a link spam e-mail or social network message, which allows the hacker to access the user's personal information.

A couple weeks ago, the FBI reported that such attacks were becoming more frequent.

George W. Bush to Twitter?

By Jordan Fabian

Our friends at the Los Angeles Times think it's within the realm of possibility.

The Times' Mark Milian singles out a tweet from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, saying that the former president just got a BlackBerry. In the tweet, Stone wonders if tweeting will come next for Bush.

While in office, president's typically do not have access to e-mail or other electronic communications for fear that their contents might be subject to public information laws.

Milian says now that Bush is out of office, the time might be ripe for tweeting. Many public figures use Twitter to publicize their books, films, and other events. If President Bush's rumored book deal becomes a reality, he might take to Twitter to promote it, Milian surmises.

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay took to Twitter only after he was selected to appear on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

An even more convincing piece of evidence: The Bush Library appears to already own the @GeorgeWBush Twitter handle. But don't get too excited folks, users are unable to follow the locked profile.

Bush's former deputy chief of staff Karl Rove already tweets @KarlRove.

New Liz Cheney foreign policy group joins Twitter

By Jordan Fabian

Keep America Safe, a new foreign policy group founded by Liz Cheney, joined Twitter on Thursday.

The group says its mission is to maintain a vigilant foreign policy against terror and prevent the Obama administration from reversing policy initiatives developed under the Bush administration.

"The current administration too often seems uncertain, wishful, irresolute, and unwilling to stand up for America, our allies and our interests," their web page said.

The organization will tweet under the handle @KeepAmericaSafe and has 201 followers. The feed, started 14 hours ago, shares news links and a video it released to coincide with its founding.

Cheney, the daughter of staunch Obama critic and former Vice President Dick Cheney, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol, and Debra Burlingame sit on the board of directors. Burlingame is the sister of Charles Burlingame, the pilot of American Airlines flight 77 that al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into the Pentagon.

DNC tweets congrats to Finance Committee on healthcare vote

By Jordan Fabian

The Democratic National Committee took to Twitter on Tuesday to congratulate the Senate Finance Committee on advancing its version of healthcare legislation.

The bill represents a large step forward for the bill in the Senate, but did not include a public health insurance option favored by liberal Democrats.

The DNC tweeted:

Congrats and thanks to the Sen Finance Cmte for making it five-for-five committees for health reform. Let's get it done. #hc09

After the panel passed the bill 14-9, the committee issued a statement calling the vote a "big step forward towards the enactment of comprehensive health insurance reform."

Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) was the only Republican to vote for the bill. Snowe was widely praised by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and the White House for her support.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), however, vowed to stand in the way of the bill, saying it would never reach the Senate floor in its current form after it is merged with the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee's proposal by Reid.

RNC creates new Twitter feed

By Jordan Fabian

The Republican National Committee has created a new Twitter feed to coincide with the launch of its new website today.

The feed, @RNCResearch, accompanies a number of blogs and social networking features dot the new site. Its first tweet claims it will tweet about all subjects and will accompany a new blog called "Stomping Grounds" hosted on the RNC's website:

As @RNC launches the new GOP.com, @RNCSCOTUS is now @RNCResearch & we will be tweeting on all subjects & blogging @ http://is.gd/4huYL

@RNCSCOTUS was created by the Republican Party during Justice Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings this summer. It had been inactive since they concluded. The account will be the RNC's second official feed, in addition to their main account @RNC.

DCCC responds to NRCC Nazi comparison

By Jordan Fabian

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said House Republicans have gone "way too far" in comparing Democratic healthcare reform efforts to Nazism.

Earlier today, a tweet appeared on the National Republican Congressional Committee's offcial Twitter feed that said "Funny Video: Moonbattery: Hitler Reacts to ObamaCare Maneuvers http://bit.ly/2mOvZ7 #Pelosi"

alt

The tweet, which has since been removed, contained video of an actor playing Adolf Hitler in a biopic delivering a rating speech.

The maker of the video, however, changed the subtitles to relate to healthcare reform. They read "Pelosi has 256 Democrats in Congress, she can pass whatever the hell she wants...this is not how you socialize your country you're supposed to bankrupt your people!"

“House Republicans have gone way too far, DCCC spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said in a statement. "The NRCC’s despicable promotion of a video comparing Speaker Pelosi’s effort to reform health insurance in America to Adolf Hitler’s extermination of millions is a shocking new low that must be condemned.

"Republican Leader John Boehner should order NRCC chairman Pete Sessions to immediately remove this vile Tweet and apologize," she added.

Hatch tweets intention to vote against Baucus bill

By Jordan Fabian

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) took to Twitter on Tuesday, saying that he will as expected vote against the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare reform bill.

The conservative senator's announcement comes on the day the Finance panel will vote on their version of the bill. The 23-member committee is expected to have a close vote, with many eyes being cast on Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) as a key swing vote.

He tweeted this morning:

The Finance Committee health care bill raises taxes, reduces Medicare benefits and costs more than $1.6 trillion over 10 years. #tcot #utpol

The bill breaks several of the promises the President made to Americans. #tcot #utpol

I will be voting against the Finance Committee health care bill today. #tcot #utpol

Hatch has long opposed the bill, citing its price tag and several provisions including a tax on Cadillac health insurance plans.
