Rick Warren now on Twitter

By Jordan Fabian
Rick Warren, an evangelical minister who delivered the invocation at President Barack Obama's inauguration, started his own Twitter account yesterday.

So far, he has tweeted four times:
2 tweet or not 2 tweet? I fear the narcissistic possibility, but can't pass up any tool to encourage you! Jumping in! .

5:30am Quiet time in backyard watching sun rise over Saddleback Mt. 1 bird chirping. The Lord is my strength. Enter the day with reverence.

You cannot win your enemies to Christ. You can only win your friends. Treat everyone with love, respect, and dignity.

If you don't know your identity, you will try to find it in someone or something else, and other people will try to determine it for you.

Liberal groups and congressmen criticized then-President-elect Obama's decision to have Warren give the invocation, citing his opposition to gay marriage and his conservative views on faith.

Last year, Warren hosted Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Obama at the Saddleback Civil Forum on Presidency, where both candidates spoke about their views on faith.

The evangelical minister founded and is head of the Saddleback Church in Orange County, California, one of the largest churches in the country.

Warren already has 6,280 followers.

Live-tweet: GOP Rep. says on healthcare, 'Pelosi jamming this through'

By Jordan Fabian
The Republican National Committee live-tweeted Rep. Dave Camp's (R-Mich.) conference call today, saying that the congressman accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of "jamming through" healthcare reform legislation.

The RNC tweeted:
Rep Camp: Markups happening so fast, CBO will not be able to ask legitimate questions, Pelosi jamming this through

Pelosi is under pressure to pass healthcare reform legislation before the August recess. The White House warned on Monday that President Obama may ask Congress to postpone its recess should it remain at a standstill on healthcare reform.

Pelosi made comments yesterday that the the House's healthcare reform bill is still incomplete, but House Democrats released it today.

The Hill's Mike O'Brien tweeted that Camp said markup on the House healthcare reform bill would begin Thursday.

While Congressional Democrats are under pressure to pass legislation by the recess, Republicans would rather delay action further. The RNC tweeted:
Rep Camp: Shouldn't meet some artificial deadline, need to take time to actually read the bill

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) also tweeted his dismay at the House health bill:
Democrats just released health bill...12:51p today, it's 1018 pages, 200 pages longer than the draft.

Camp also took a shot at President Barack Obama during the call. The RNC tweeted:
Rep Camp mentions that President's visit to Michigan was to be a town hall, now a speech, "must've been too many hard questions"

The RNC tapped the Michigan Republican for the conference call the same day President Barack Obama will deliver an address in the state on the economy.

Earlier today, Obama told reporters that he expects unemployment figures to "continue to tick up for several months."

Michigan's unemployment rate is now 14 percent.

2 former LSU Tigers playing in the All Star Game tonight - Aaron Hill of the Toronto Blue Jays and Brad Hawpe of the Colorado Rockies.

Vitter might have a problem with allegiances, Hawpe will suit up for the National League while Hill is playing for the American League.

McCain takes to Twitter to defend nixing of F-22

By Jordan Fabian
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) used Twitter to reaffirm his willingness to cut the F-22 Raptor from the National Defense Authorization Act, which provides funding to military and defense agencies.

McCain, who is ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, tweeted in response to a tweet and blog post by ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Jake Tapper:
POTUS, @SenJohnMcCain unite to eliminate F-22 Raptor > http://bit.ly/3pmCK6

@jaketapper But I do support the Joint Strike Fighter, which will give us the balance we need.

Tapper wrote that:
President Obama and his former election rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., have found common cause: they are both seeking to eliminate the F-22 fighter jet from the National Defense Authorization Act.

In letters to McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and the committee chair, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the president urged his support for efforts to eliminate funding for the F-22 "Raptor" beyond the existing contract. (Read the letters HERE.)

Obama pledged to veto the bill if it reached his desk with the F-22 project still included. However, McCain and Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) failed to eliminate funding for the fighter jet during committee markups.

Tapper asked:
@senjohnmccain If you, Levin, POTUS, Gates + [Mullen want the F-22 killed why do u think it looks like it will survive?

The ABC newsman referred to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen.

Twitter Room will keep you updated if and when Sen. McCain responds to Tapper's inquiry.

Meghan McCain: You mess with Lindsey Graham, you mess with me

By Michael O'Brien
Meghan McCain went to bat for one of the top surrogates for her father John McCain's (R-Ariz.) 2008 presidential campaign, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

Graham's been in the news prominently over the last few days during confirmation hearings in Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court. Graham has signaled that he may vote to confirm Sotomayor, earning the enmity of some conservatives.

McCain tweeted Tuesday:
anyone who is talking smack about Senator Lindsey Graham is going to have a problem with me as well, that man is family to me.

McCaskill has harsh words for stimulus 'scam ads'

By Jordan Fabian
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) slammed the efforts of scam artists who promise stimulus money to individuals Tuesday.

She tweeted:
Scam ads are disgustng.Ads tryng to take advantage of peoples pain by promisng govt help, stimulus $ for a fee.I wanna help nail em.Seen any?

Twitter Room is not certain if McCaskill referred to any specific ad. In March, however, there was a mini-scandal about similar ads that popped up on Facebook and Google.

CNET reported that:
Deceptive Web sites, advertisements, and e-mail campaigns have cropped up across the Web in recent weeks, luring consumers into scams by promising them federal grant money from the stimulus package, the Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday.

The FTC is investigating these scams and is reaching out to the private sector for help. Google on Wednesday morning committed to investigating stimulus-related ads that violate its anti-scam policy, and Facebook has pulled ads for stimulus funds from its site, in accordance with a new advertising policy it implemented this week.

Reid: Americans 'will get change' on healthcare

By Jordan Fabian
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) used strong rhetoric in backing healthcare reform legislation that has faced delays in the Senate.

He tweeted:
The idea that we should do nothing on health care is as dangerous as it is costly. American people have called for change & will get change.

The White House warned on Monday that President Barack Obama may ask Congress to delay their August recess if they cannot overcome several impasses on the legislation.

The Senate healthcare reform bill is still sitting in markup in the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. The Senate Finance Committee, which is responsible for allocating funds for the $1 trillion bill, has also been trying to broker a bipartisan deal on the legislation to no avail.

On Monday, Reid claimed that "We're going to do healthcare before we leave here," referring to the August recess.

By Jordan Fabian

Congress to begin hearings on fatal Metro crash

By Jordan Fabian
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) tweeted that the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold hearings to investigate the June 22 Metrorail crash in Washington, DC that claimed 9 lives.
Oversight hearing today on Metro Red Line crash and DC gov response at 2 PM. Fmr. Oversight Chairman Tom Davis appearing at witness for us.

The testimony of former Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) may be notable. Davis chaired the Oversight Committee from 2003 to 2007.

Davis championed Metro during his time in Congress, advocating a stable funding source for the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA), which operates Metro. The same bill, which died in the Senate, sought to increase funding for WMATA.

Currently, several separate jurisdictions that transit system serves independently fund it.

Issa is ranking member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Hatch: Sotomayor confirmation is 'battle over control of the country'

By Jordan Fabian
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) framed the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor in dire terms this morning, saying the hearings amounted to a "battle over control of the country."

He tweeted Tuesday:
Listening to both sides during Day 1 of the Sotomayor hearing proved 1 thing-the battle over judges is not merely a philosophical battle...

...it is a battle over control of the country.

It remains to be seen how Republican senators will vote on President Obama's first Supreme Court nominee. Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) targeted Sotomayor for her "prejudice" in his opening statement yesterday.

On the other hand, Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) labeled the U.S. Court of Appeals judge "within the mainstream."

Yesterday, Hatch solicited questions for Sotomayor from his Twitter followers.

Right now, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is questioning Sotomayor during her confirmation hearing.
