In an effort to clear the Whittier tunnel, DOT will begin blasting at noon. For more info, go to http://tinyurl.com/ctcl32.

Obama and Biden head to Virginia for burgers

By Michael O'Brien
The Hill's White House correspondent, Sam Youngman, informed us minutes ago that the president and vice president left the White House for their weekly lunch, and headed to Alexandria Arlington, Va. for lunch.

According to one Twitter user, President Obama and Vice President Biden are continuing in this administration's affinity for cheeseburgers, dining at a burger joint in Virginia.

The Washington Times's Amanda Carpenter tweeted Tuesday:
So Obama and Biden are eating at Ray's Hell Burger. That's a block from my house. But I'm at work. No fun!

Ray's Hell Burger is one of the Washington area's nouveau burger joints, joining new establishments like Z-Burger in Tenleytown and Good Stuff Eatery on Capitol Hill, owned by reality tv chef Spike Mendelsohn.

The First Lady is a fan of burgers, too. She admitted sneaking out with staffers to grab a bite at another local favorite, 5 Guys.

Vitter calls out colleagues via Twitter

By Michael O'Brien
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) made no secret Tuesday that he was disappointed that an amendment he submitted yesterday was voted down.

Vitter called out Senate colleagues via Twitter:
I'm disappointed that the Senate defeated my amendment that would have allowed banks to repay $100 Billion back to the American taxpayer.

Vitter's amendment, which was supported by fiscal conservative groups, would have permitted well-capitalized banks to pay back any money they've received under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) as soon as they want.

Obama's late mother to be published

By Eric Zimmermann
ABC's Jake Tapper shares some interesting news via his most recent tweet:
jaketapperPOTUS's late mother to become published author -- http://tinyurl.com/cjpmje

The link goes to Tapper's blog, where he reveals that Duke University Press will publish Ann Dunham's anthropology dissertation, which she completed in 1982:
The 368-page book is based on Dunham's 14 years of research into the metalworking industries of the Javanese village of Kajar, exploring how Kajar's industry offers a viable economic alternative in an area of rural Southeast Asia normally dependent upon rice. "Surviving against the Odds: Village Industry in Indonesia" will sell for $27.95, and will be revised and edited by two anthropologists: Dunham's graduate adviser, Alice G. Dewey, and one of Dunham's fellow graduate students, Nancy I. Cooper.

Trapped in a Senate subway car

By Michael O'Brien
Four Senators are trapped on a stuck Senate subway car, according to a tweet by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.).

The subway stalled out between the Capitol and the Hart Senate office building, McCaskill said, leaving her and Sens. George Voinovich (R-Ohio), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) stuck.

McCaskill tweeted:
Stuck in tram from Capitol to Hart. Broken. Not moving. Lieberman and Alexander in next car. And Voiniitch. Wonder how long we'll be here?

The lawmakers often use the subway system to avoid the walk between the Capitol and their offices.

SEIU's Stern: Take Sestak seriously

By Michael O'Brien
Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) is a serious Senate candidate, Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) President Andy Stern tweeted Tuesday.

Stern had met with Sestak yesterday to discuss the Democrat's intentions in the Pennsylvania Senate race. Sestak has been making a lot of noise as of late about challenging Sen. Arlen Specter (D) in the state's 2010 Democratic primary.

Stern tweeted Tuesday morning:
Sestak is serious about Senate race. Doing Senate Finance Roundtable today on health care.

Beyond their traditional influence in Democratic contests, union leaders have made clear that their support for Specter in a primary is still an open question. Specter has said he opposes the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), a prized piece of union legislation, even after having switched parties to pursue reelection as a Democrat.
