Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) enjoyed a nice Japanese dinner last night, something that drew the unlikely input from liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas ("kos" of Daily Kos).
Gingrich tweeted last night:
We are having a fabulous dinner of shabu shabu at tachibana soon to be followed by superb green tea ice cream
(Shabu shabu, apparently, is a Japanese version of a hot pot.)
This drew the attention of Moulitsas, who retweeted Gingrich, calling it "elitist."
And then kos added:
@newtgingrich Shabu shabu at tachibana and green tea ice cream is okay as long as there's no arugula and a presidential campaign involved.
As the saying goes: Shabu shabu makes strange bedfellows.

The Fix's Chris Cillizza is live tweeting the White House press briefing on Cuba policy, and it seems he was caught a little off guard by the Spanish-language portion. Here are a few select tweets:
and away we go
C-SPAN just called Gibbs "Secretary Gibbs". Elevated to Cabinet level!
Um, the Fix does NOT speak Spanish...hence no idea what is being said...hear an "El Presidente" in there....was that a "niner"?
This is like a Cormac McCarthy novel...
Um, Robert, You know I don't speak Spanish.
We lost a follower...was it the Cormac McCarthy reference? Too literary?
"Usurious fees on these remittances" -- Um, what? Also, never use a $10 word when a .10 cent word will suffice. (Is suffice a $10 word?)
Chuckie T. aka the goatee asks why the president isn't making the Cuba announcement..."looks like you are voiding his voice in the picture"
BREAKING: "I am standing in the White House briefing room." -- Gibbs. Fix news: I am sitting at my desk.
Check out The Fix's whole Twitter feed here.

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), who tweeted earlier today of his travels in Connecticut with Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan, followed up Monday afternoon with what could prove to be a controversial claim.
Dodd tweeted:
Treating Shaun to some of the best pizza in the world. Picking up a pie from Pepe's.
Politicians are known for their provincial pizza preferences, and, to be fair, Dodd and Donovan are in New Haven, Conn. today, which is home to its own style of pizza.
But the question remains: Will Dodd, who faces a tough reelection battle in 2010, lose the votes of New York City commuters, with their prized style of pie?
There was no immediate word whether Donovan, a former housing director in New York City, liked the New Haven slice.

While many are giving some credit to President Obama for the safe rescue of an American captain taken hostage by pirates, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) has a different take.
Thompson tweeted Monday:
Give Credit Where It's Due ... The US Navy http://tinyurl.com/53v85 #ftrs #tcot
Thompson isn't a Navy veteran, but he did play one in the movies. Thompson played a Navy admiral in the 1990 Tom Clancy thriller "The Hunt for Red October."

After the first week of the congressional recess yielded excited coverage of pirate attacks and car chases on the cable news networks, it seems week two may not be much different.
Cable news channels are interspersing the latest this morning on a now-finished car chase in Los Angeles, but the MSNBC anchor covering the chase still seemed enthralled.
Anchor Tamron Hall tweeted:
still amazed how the pirate drama ended..now covering a car chase...what a morn
UPDATE: The Club for Growth's Andy Roth is again excitable about the L.A. chase. Maybe he's a candidate to revive the defunct "World's Wildest Police Videos"?

Former Vice President Al Gore approves of President Obama's pledge to fight climate change in a speech abroad, letting his thoughts be known via Twitter.
Gore tweeted Monday:
This is good to hear: http://tinyurl.com/cpd883 Thank you @BarackObama
The tweet from Gore represents a somewhat unusual public exchange between a sitting president and a former vice president. Also, it would appear that Obama (or at least his staff) is unlikely to receive the message directly; Obama's Twitter feed has remained largely dormant since inauguration.

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), taking an aggressive tack toward likely primary challenger Pat Toomey, launched a multiplatform Web 2.0 attack today.
Specter tweeted an attack against Toomey, former chairman of the fiscally conservative Club for Growth, which linked through to a document on Specter's Facebook page.
Specter tweeted:
Toomey's 2 Resumes. What's he hiding? Learn more at http://tinyurl.com/cuxqje
The link follows through to a letter Specter has written to Toomey insinuating that Toomey had intentionally excluded his background in the financial services sector in an online biography.
The strategy represents a concerted online effort against Toomey's campaign using latest-generation social networking and blogging software to advance a political message, a tactic in which Republicans have lacked in recent elections.
