What's on your nightstand?
Posted: 09/18/08 06:29 PM [ET]
Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.)

What book is on your nightstand right now?
The book Troublesome Young Men [by Lynne Olson]. It’s a fascinating and very well-written book about the anti-appeasement movement in the British Parliament and ultimately the rise of Winston Churchill.

What magazines do you regularly read?
I read National Review and Human Events, though that’s more of a periodical.

What’s your guilty-pleasure read?
Vince Flynn’s action books. He’s a relatively new author. I just bought a whole bunch of his books. I read Consent to Kill, Transfer of Power and The Third Option.

Which books have most influenced your political philosophy?

The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk, Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt and Can Capitalism Survive? by Benjamin Rogge.

Which books about Washington should every member read?
Atlas Shrugged [by Ayn Rand].

What are your favorite novels of all time?
A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin.

Which author do you most often reference?

Mark Helprin. He also writes editorials in The Wall Street Journal.
