•AGRICULTURE. Southpaw Strategies is lobbying for Florida Crystals Corp., a sugar manufacturer, according to Senate lobbying records.

•AIRLINES. Former Rep. William Lipinski (D-Ill.) is lobbying for United Airlines, based in Chicago. Lipinski, whose son, Daniel (D), replaced him in Congress and now sits on the House Transportation Committee, also is lobbying for the Association of American Railroads.

Meanwhile, Holland & Knight is lobbying for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority on budget issues.
•ENERGY. The Large Public Power Council hired Clark & Weinstock to lobby on its behalf. The lobbying team includes Julie Hershey Carr, a former senior policy adviser for Rep. Joe Pitts.

Syntroleum, through JC Watts Companies, hired O’Connor & Hannon to lobby on “legislation affecting the production and distribution of renewable and alternative fuels,” according to the lobbying registration. O’Connor & Hannon’s Michael Whatley, a former chief of staff to Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) and staff director to the Senate Environment and Public Works Clean Air subcommittee, is lobbying for Syntroleum, according to Senate lobbying records. The American Petroleum Institute also hired Olsson, Frank & Weeda to lobby on energy and agriculture bills this Congress.

H2Diesel of Houston, Texas, hired Greenberg Traurig to lobby on biofuels issues.

•HOMELAND SECURITY. Microsoft hired Monument Policy Group to lobby on immigration, homeland-security and international-trade issues. The team includes former Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security Stewart Verdery.

•IRAQ. The Carmen Group is lobbying for the Iraqi Red Crescent Society. Constance Newman, the former assistant secretary of state for African affairs, is among the team that is helping the aid group “develop a strategic plan for obtaining funds to be used for humanitarian assistance in Iraq,” according to Senate lobbying records.

•PENSIONS. Americans for a Secure Retirement hired the Bockorny Group to lobby on issues relating to the insurance industry, specifically legislation that would affect annuities, according to Senate lobbying records. Michael Sims, a former legislative counsel to Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), is on the team of lobbyists working for the group.
