Pence: 'We will put American boots on the face of Mars'

Vice President Pence pledged during a tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday that the U.S. would put humans on Mars.

“Here the Hubble Space Telescope, the New Horizons, and so many other technological wonders lifted off the Earth to give us a glimpse of our fellow planets, the distant stars and the infinite galaxies that are a window into our very past,” Pence said at Cape Canaveral.

“And here from this bridge to space, our nation will return to the moon, and we will put American boots on the face of Mars,” he said.

The vice president's comments come almost a week after President Trump signed an executive order reinstating the National Space Council, which had been dormant for nearly 25 years.

Pence, who announced the White House’s plan to re-launch the program in June, will serve as the council’s chairman and assist Trump with selecting people to serve on the board.

The council aims to centralize several federal agencies with oversight of space policy.

“It will be my great honor to as vice president of the United States to serve as its chair,” Pence said on Thursday.
