Clinton appointee switches support to Obama
Posted: 05/01/08 12:05 PM [ET]
Former Democratic National Committee Chairman and superdelegate Joe Andrew has switched his support from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). He wrote a letter to fellow superdelegates urging them to do the same.

Andrew, appointed by President Bill Clinton to chair the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 1999 to 2001, warned fellow superdelegates against a continued primary fight between Obama and Clinton.

“The battle should not be amongst ourselves,” Andrew wrote. “We should focus our efforts on those who are truly on the opposite side: those who want to continue the failed policies of the last eight years."

To end the infighting, Andrew suggested superdelegates all “come together right now” behind Obama, whom Andrew called “inspiring.”

Recognizing that such a switch may spurn Clinton supporters and divide Democrats, Andrew wrote: “It is therefore incumbent on all of us who once supported Sen. Clinton to welcome the thousands who should now switch their support to Sen. Obama.”
