Davis makes it official, will not run for Senate
Posted: 10/25/07 10:21 AM [ET]
Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) made official Thursday his decision to not run for the Senate next year.

Davis said it is “probably not the right time” for him to run for Senate, citing the state Republican Party’s decision to select its nominee using a convention, which he said hurts the party in the general election.

At stake is the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. John Warner (R) at the end of this Congress. Former Gov. Mark Warner (D) is expected to be his party’s nominee and is the early frontrunner for the seat.

After initially resisting an attempt to get him to rule out a bid completely at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, Davis told television reporters: “On the Senate side, we’re not going to be doing that.”

Davis would not say whether he would run for reelection to his House seat but noted that he is still raising money.
