Ensign: McCain makes Senate races more difficult
Posted: 10/27/08 03:47 PM [ET]
Nevada Sen. John Ensign, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, on Monday said John McCain’s presidential run is making Senate races “more difficult” for the GOP.

Ensign said there is a “fair possibility” that Democrats could gain 60 seats in the Senate.

“There's no question the top of the ticket is affecting our Senate races and it’s making it a lot more difficult,” Ensign said on MSNBC. “It’s a fairly toxic atmosphere out there with the financial crisis for Republicans.”

However, Ensign noted that Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) could be a wild card in the Senate power play.

“We welcome Joe. I think Joe’s a terrific guy with a lot of integrity and does what he believes,” Ensign stated. “But, you know, it'll be interesting to see how the Democrats handle Joe Lieberman after what he's done in this presidential race. But as far as Republicans are concerned, we welcome him with open arms.”

Lieberman is a staunch supporter of Republican presidential nominee Sen. McCain (Ariz.).
