Kerry gives DSCC $1 million
Posted: 09/30/08 02:51 PM [ET]
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) has made a $1 million contribution from his campaign to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), he told supporters in an e-mail Tuesday.

Kerry said the current financial crisis shows how important it is for Democrats to get to 60 seats.

“It's time to push even harder to completely change Washington,” Kerry wrote in an e-mail. “So I have an announcement: I just gave a million dollars from my campaign to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to try to make this happen.”

Kerry is up for reelection himself this year, but faces a lower-tier challenge from security consultant Jeff Beatty (R).

Thanks to the millions he had left over from his failed 2004 presidential campaign, Kerry had $7.5 million on hand as of late August. Beatty had just $50,000.

Kerry easily won a primary challenge this month with 69 percent of the vote, defeating first-time candidate Ed O’Reilly, who took 31 percent.

The contribution is a big one for a committee that raises several million dollars per month. The DSCC has gone up early with ads this cycle and saw its huge cash advantage decline to less than $10 million at the end of August.
