Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign on Saturday pointed to statements from some GOP candidates lauding vice presidential pick Sen. Joseph Biden (Del.). In an email sent to reporters, the campaign noted that GOP Sens. Dick Lugar (Ind.), Chuck Hagel (Neb.) and Arlen Specter (Pa.) have all stated admiration for Biden's foreign policy knowledge. “Joe Biden is the right partner for Barack Obama,” Hagel said, according to the e-mail. “His many years of distinguished service to America, his seasoned judgment and his vast experience in foreign policy and national security will match up well with the unique challenges of the 21st Century.” Hagel added that “an Obama-Biden ticket is a very impressive and strong team.” Lugar, en route to Georgia, congratulated Obama on his selection, noting that he has “enjoyed for many years the opportunity to work with Joe Biden to bring strong bipartisan support to United States foreign policy.” Perhaps more importantly, the news of Obama’s selection was commented on favorably by former rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), who said that Obama “has continued in the best traditions for the vice presidency by selecting an exceptionally strong, experienced leader and devoted public servant. “Sen. Biden will be a purposeful and dynamic vice president who will help Sen. Obama both win the presidency and govern this great country,” Clinton said. |
