Obama's $32.5 million beat Clinton in second quarter
Posted: 07/01/07 10:44 PM [ET]
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Sunday announced a fundraising total of $32.5 million for the second quarter, setting a new record and outraising Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) by $5 million.

The Obama camp said that $31 million of that total is allotted for the primary election. Clinton has yet to specify how much of the approximate $27 million her campaign announced she raised is earmarked for the primaries.

Obama boasted contributions from over 154,000 donors in the second quarter, bringing his total to 258,000 donors this year.

“Together, we have built the largest grassroots campaign in history for this stage of a presidential race,” Obama said in a written statement. “We now have hundreds of thousands of Americans who are ready to demand health care for all, energy independence, and an end to this war in Iraq.”

Obama praised his supporters for creating the “kind of movement that can change the special interest-driven politics in Washington and transform our country.”

Clinton has yet to release how many donors contributed to her campaign in the second quarter. Her campaign received contributions from approximately 60,000 donors in the first quarter.

Then-president Bill Clinton set the previous second quarter Democratic fundraising record in 1995, raising $9.6 million for the primaries.

Former Sen. John Edwards (N.C.) finished third in the Democratic fundraising race, reaching his goal of $9 million. His campaign also noted Sunday that he has received donations from over 100,000 people this year.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson’s (D) campaign announced a $7 million second quarter fundraising total on June 29. All of Richardson’s $7 million is for the primaries.
